Possible Ban on Certain Pesticide Chemicals Could Negatively Affect TN Agriculture

چکیده
increases, production adjustments or the impacts of technological change in the form of new chemicals and pest control techniques into account, an analysis of the effects of a ban on organophosphates and carbamates two chemicals widely used in crop production shows that net farm income in Tennessee could be reduced by about $83 million the first year following the ban and $132 million in the fifth year, compared to 1997 Tennessee farm revenue. The crops most vulnerable to the ban on organophosphates and carbamates are tobacco, cotton, apples, peaches, and greens. The banning of these two chemicals could result as part of the proposed implementation of the Food Quality Protection Act (FQPA). Thirty pesticide active ingredients belonging to these two classes are widely used as pesticides, and in Tennessee these pesticides are presently used on many of the leading cash crops such as cotton, tobacco, soybeans, and corn. They are also a vital part of the pest management strategies for many producers of fruits and vegetables in the state.

Decontamination of Pesticide Residues for Sustainable Agriculture
Sustainable Agriculture satisfies human food and fiber needs, makes the most efficient use of on-farm resources and integrates natural biological cycles, enhances the quality of life for farmers and society as a whole, and sustains the economic viability of farm operations. A farm that is able to produce continuously, yet has negative effects on environmental quality elsewhere, does not support...
متن کاملIs dietary pesticide exposure related to semen quality? Positive evidence from men attending a fertility clinic.
Chiu and her colleagues from Harvard School of Public Health and Massachusetts General Hospital present important new data on semen quality in relation to dietary pesticide exposure via fruit and vegetable intake (Chiu et al., 2015). To examine this relationship the authors utilized a novel approach that classifies fruits and vegetables into high versus low-to-moderate pesticide residue groups ...
متن کاملEffects of a provincial ban of two toxic organophosphorus insecticides on pesticide poisoning hospital admissions
BACKGROUND Pesticide self-poisoning causes one third of global suicides. Sri Lanka halved its suicide rate by banning WHO Class I organophosphorus (OP) insecticides and then endosulfan. However, poisoning with Class II toxicity OPs, particularly dimethoate and fenthion, remains a problem. We aimed to determine the effect and feasibility of a ban of the two insecticides in one Sri Lankan distric...

متن کاملPatterns of pesticide use among farmers: implications for epidemiologic research.
Epidemiologic studies of farmers have linked pesticides with certain cancers. Information on exposures from many of these studies was obtained by interview of farmers or their next-of-kin. The reliability and validity of data on pesticide use obtained by recall, often years after the event, have been questioned. Pesticide use, however, is an integral component in most agricultural operations, a...
